Walking

With plenty of lovely local walks as you step out of the door you can walk around the farm or the surrounding area. The Angus Glens made up of Glen Clova, Glen Doll and Glen Esk are a fabulous location for walks of all grades from gentle strolls to more challenging and technical hikes. The Glenshee area and beyond has a lot to offer too including the Linn of Dee and the start of the Lairig Ghru.

The Cateran Trail is a 65 mile circular route which starts and ends in Blairgowrie, encapsulating some of Eastern Scotland’s loveliest landscapes, and part of this trail passes through our farm. Based on ancient drovers paths it is a great blend of riverside and woodland, open moorland and glimpses of the Highlands. You don’t have to walk it all in one go of course – it can be split into 5 or 6 walks ranging from 4 to 7 hours in length. Details of the Cateran Trail walks can be found on the Walk Highlands site.

Culture and heritage

East Perthshire boasts a rich and varied heritage. From the Picts who lived here two thousand years ago, to the mills of the industrial revolution. The evidence of this history is with us today and can be seen across the countryside, when visiting nearby towns and villages of the area. Meigle has a site with Pictish stones and if you’re more interested in where the ancient crowning place of Scottish Kings was you could visit Scone Palace near Perth and Stanley Mills.

Throughout the year there are various art and cultural events from Perthshire Open Studios which takes place in September, local Highland games which take place throughout the summer (Blairgowrie’s is the first Sunday in September) and the Bookmark Festival in Blairgowrie.

Distilleries

No trip to Scotland is really complete without a trip to a distillery. Our local one is Edradour situated between Blairgowrie and Pitlochry, famed for being the smallest traditional distillery in Scotland making single malt by hand. The Famous Grouse Experience near Crieff offers tours at their Glenturret distillery and some of the most famous whiskies in the world (such as Macallan, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet) are created in Speyside which can be reached easily from us.

Fishing

We can offer guests the opportunity to fish for trout from the banks of the River Isla on the farm – no guarantees that you will catch anything though! Fishing on Lintrathen Loch is only 2 miles away with permits required and available for purchase on site. Salmon fishing is also available on the Tay and Isla Rivers. There are stocked lochs for trout fishing at Ledyatt, Piper Dam and Butterstone some of which are open all year.

The Tay salmon season runs from 15th January to 15th October. There is no salmon or sea trout fishing in Scotland on Sundays.

The brown trout river season runs from 15th March to 6th October (inclusive). Stocked lochs may open throughout the year.

Golf

It would be hard to choose a better place for a golfing holiday. This part of Scotland is home to some of the most famous courses in the world – St Andrews, Gleneagles and Carnoustie are all within an hour’s drive from the farm. There are also some great local courses to choose from including the Alyth Golf Club, Strathmore Golf Centre and the Blairgowrie Golf Club as well as others at Kirriemuir, Dundee (Downfield, Caird Park) and Monifieth.

Snow Sports

Glenshee Ski Centre offers the UK’s most extensive skiing and snowboarding facilities with 22 lifts and 36 runs. There are plenty of options for skiers and boarders of all abilities. Tuition, guiding and equipment hire are all available.
